UCLA walked into one of college football’s toughest road environments on Saturday night and walked out with a program-defining win, stunning No. 13 Oregon 17-14 for the Bruins’ first victory in Eugene since 2004, according to reports.
The Ducks had lost just twice in their previous 26 home games, but the night belonged to the visitors. UCLA won despite quarterback Nico Iamaleava throwing two interceptions without a touchdown — and despite an injury scare — largely because of a calamitous night from the quarterback on the other sideline.
Oregon backup Dylan Raiola completed barely 31% of his passes for just 43 yards with two touchdowns, according to the reports, and the Ducks lost seven turnovers, five of them fumbles. It was the kind of collapse that made the upset possible even on a night when UCLA’s own offense sputtered.
The result keeps UCLA undefeated at 5-0 and delivers the signature win of the Bruins’ season, while Oregon falls to 3-2 — a long way from the Ducks’ preseason No. 2 ranking. For a program that had not won in Eugene in more than two decades, it was the kind of road triumph that can define a campaign.
The stunner headlined another chaotic Saturday in Week 6, which also saw Georgia Tech edge previously unbeaten Duke 28-25 on a missed late field goal, Army’s Cale Hellums rush for 223 yards in a 20-17 win over Tulane, and No. 1 Ohio State roll past Maryland.
