CHENNAI, India — Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has turned its opening day into a record book entry, grossing an estimated ₹125.25 crore worldwide on Thursday, October 15, and becoming the biggest Tamil opening of 2026 and the biggest Tamil opener globally on record, according to box office tracker Sacnilk.
The Nelson Dilipkumar-directed sequel collected roughly ₹59.70 crore net in India — around ₹70.25 crore gross from more than 16,500 tracked shows — with Tamil-language screenings delivering the largest share. Overseas, the film added about ₹55 crore (nearly US$6 million), which meant almost 44 per cent of the worldwide total came from outside India. Trade estimates reported footfalls of nearly 37.5 lakh across India on day one, with overall occupancy above 55 per cent.
The records kept stacking up. The film overtook Jana Nayagan to become 2026’s biggest Tamil opener and surpassed Thalapathy Vijay’s final film to become the biggest Tamil opener worldwide. It also emerged as Rajinikanth’s third-biggest opener, behind only Coolie and 2.0, and ranked among the top Indian openers of the year. In Kerala and Karnataka it set new records for a Tamil film’s opening day — remarkable given neither is a home market.
Overseas muscle and a slow-building buzz
What makes the haul notable is how it was assembled. Trackers reported that pre-release advance sales were modest, with word of mouth from early shows lifting collections as the day progressed — night shows reportedly outperformed noon screenings by a wide margin. The international breakdown showed the United States and the Middle East among the strongest territories, followed by contributions from Malaysia, the United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore and Canada, underlining the franchise’s reach among Tamil diaspora audiences. The worldwide haul sits well ahead of the recent weekend leader ‘Other Mommy’ ($27.5 million), and like this week’s trailer-led Tamil release, the film shows how first-day momentum is increasingly decided by morning-show chatter.
What comes next for the sequel
The film reunites Rajinikanth with composer Anirudh Ravichander and brings back his Tiger Muthuvel Pandian from the 2023 blockbuster, this time up against the powerful Kalpak family in Goa, with S. J. Suryah, Vidya Balan, Mithun Chakraborty and guest appearances by Hrithik Roshan and Vijay Sethupathi rounding out the cast. The first Jailer went on to gross more than ₹600 crore worldwide, setting a benchmark the sequel has now beaten from day one — at least on the opening line. The real test begins now: whether the momentum holds through the opening weekend and the working weekdays that follow.
