Rajinikanth is rewriting the Tamil box-office record book in real time. Two days after release, his action sequel Jailer 2 has reportedly crossed &rupee;200 crore in worldwide gross — one of the fastest starts in the history of Tamil cinema.
The Times of India, citing box-office tracking figures, put the film’s worldwide gross at approximately &rupee;209.10 crore after Friday, October 16. The second day added &rupee;35.60 crore net in India, taking the two-day domestic net total to &rupee;95.30 crore, with overseas gross reaching &rupee;97 crore, according to NewsNation’s box-office report.
A record opening, then more records
The film opened on October 15 to an estimated &rupee;125.25 crore worldwide — a record opening — with roughly 3.75 million theatre admissions across India on day one. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the sequel brings back Rajinikanth as retired jailer Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, alongside Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan and SJ Suryah.
Trade trackers caution that the figures are estimates, not audited accounts, and totals can differ between services. But the direction is unmistakable: the film is performing across domestic and overseas markets alike, with strong advance bookings carrying into the weekend and family audiences turning out in force.
The bigger picture
The run lands in a crowded box-office season, and it confirms the durability of the Jailer brand. The 2023 original was among the biggest Tamil hits of its year, and Nelson Dilipkumar has now delivered back-to-back blockbusters with the franchise — a rare feat in an industry where sequels often stumble.
Reports of the film’s ending — including a surprise appearance and unresolved plot threads — have already sparked speculation about a third instalment. No sequel has been officially announced. For now, the industry is watching the weekend: if the momentum holds, Jailer 2 could set a benchmark Tamil cinema chases for years.
