Former Indian cricketer Pragyan Ojha opened up about Team India’s combination for the T20 World Cup 2024. He while talking about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli said that in the upcoming two or three series things will be cleared and everyone will get to know what the think tank is thinking.
The T20 World Cup 2024 is around seven months away and if there’s anyone who is most confused related to the combination, it’s the Indian cricket team. There have been no signs of seniors in the team and still, youngsters are getting the opportunity.
It’s fair to say that experimentation is on in Indian cricket ahead of the T20 World Cup and there’s currently no clarity on who will be there in the team. There is even no certainty about who will captain the team in the event. Also, there have been lots of debates revolving around a selection of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
The seniors haven’t played T20Is since the T20 World Cup 2022 and to get directly into the team in place of youngsters, who have been playing since last one year, will not be fair. But one cannot ignore the kind of ability Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli bring into the team.
Pragyan Ojha said that it is not right to say Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are not part of the white-ball setup. He stressed that BCCI is testing young players to see how they will react in a given situation. Speaking on the sidelines of LLC, he said (as quoted by TOI):
“It is too quick to say that Rohit and Virat aren’t a part of the white-ball setup. The think tank and management know about the potential of Rohit and Virat. Right now, new players are being given a chance, they are being understood how they will react in a given situation.
“That management and selectors will decide; in the coming two or three series, we will get to know what Team India’s think tank is thinking.”
Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers shared his verdict on the debate related to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli playing in the T20 World Cup 2024. He said that the duo would want to go there and win the tournament.
Ab de Villiers pointed out that if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have a hunger to play in the tournament then they should definitely play. Speaking in a video posted on his YouTube channel, he explained:
“We just have to see them there (Rohit & Virat). It’s all about their hunger. Do they have the hunger to go there and win the T20 World Cup? I think so. I cannot speak on their behalf but I think they will want to go there and win. T20 World Cup is a short tournament and you do set yourselves up to have another chance of winning a World Cup. So I do see them going there.”
It remains to be seen what will be the combination that India opt for in the T20 World Cup 2024.
