Mistakes Car Owners Make When Buying Tires
Featured

Do you need to buy a new tire or tires for your vehicle? If so, avoid these common mistakes that many car owners make when buying tires, from picking the wrong size to compromising quality for the price.

Don’t Do the Research

Many car owners aren’t familiar with the intricacies of tires. They can’t figure out the best quality, what’s most suitable for their car and driving style, etc. That’s all right, though. We can’t all be car and tire experts! But that’s no excuse for buying a subpar tire you’ll regret later.

Before you purchase any tire, it’s wise to read reviews you can find online from regular drivers who have bought the tires. Furthermore, you should look at what owners of the same car have bought in the past and whether they have worked for them. You’ll also want to see which tire is best for the driving you do the most. You can find tires for highways and metro areas or that reduce hydroplaning, for example.

Replace Only One Tire

One of the most common mistakes car owners make when buying tires is that they only replace a single tire instead of all. Drivers replacing a damaged or flat tire often only want one new tire instead of an entire set to save money.

But it’s also best for your car and driving comfort to replace all car tires at the same time. After all, your car should drive on four equal tires. If one sticks out like a sore thumb, it’ll affect the vehicle’s balance and your comfort while driving.

Buy the Wrong Size

The worst mistake a car owner can make when shopping for new tires is getting the wrong size! Most car owners couldn’t say what size tire their car uses off the top of their heads, but it’s quite easy to find.

The tire size and other key information are on the tire sidewall. An example would be 205/55R 16 91H. From left to right, these numbers and letters indicate the section width, aspect ratio, tire construction, wheel diameter, load index, and tire speed rating. Even if you don’t know what the numbers mean, you’ll know which tires fit as long as you know where to find them!

Go Cheap

Some car owners balk at the price of quality tires, especially when replacing all four. While it may not seem like a big deal, car owners should never sacrifice quality for price with their vehicles, especially not for tires.

That’s not to say you can’t find quality tires on a budget, but if you want to spend as little money as possible, you’ll end up with subpar tires. Cheap, inferior tires are more likely to fail or wear down faster, which means worse long-term value for the driver than just paying more upfront for higher-quality rubber.
