In a massive boost to Harry Brook’s World Cup chances, the supremely talented batsman has been added to the England National Cricket Team squad for the upcoming four-match ODI series against the New Zealand National Cricket Team. The four-match series between the BlackCaps and the Three Lions will be played on September 8, 10, 13 and 15.
Harry Brook was left out of England’s provisional World Cup squad as he was forced to make way for all-rounder Ben Stokes, who took a U-turn on his ODI retirement to participate in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.
However, since being ignored for the World Cup, Harry Brook has made his case stronger to make it to the final World Cup squad by smashing a sensational ton in the Hundred and hitting 43* and 67 in their first two T20Is against New Zealand.
Meanwhile, Brook has been included in the England ODI squad for the series against New Zealand as “batting cover”. This is the second inclusion made to the squad after Brydon Carse’s selection.
England squad for New Zealand ODIs: Jos Buttler (c), Gus Atkinson, Dawid Malan, Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Reece Topley, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid, Ben Stokes, Joe Root, Brydon Carse, Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran.
England white-ball coach Matthew Mott recently dropped a hint that Harry Brook could make it to the 15-man squad for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. Mott said that Harry Brook’s response after being left out of the World Cup squad has impressed him very much.
“I don’t think anyone doubts Harry’s ability,” Mott told Sky Sports. “He’s an incredible player and he’s shown that. What I’ve been most impressed by is his response since missing out and that’s what great players do. There’s a lot to play out before we pick that first XI against New Zealand in India and we’ve always said it’s a provisional squad. Everyone will get a really good opportunity to show what they’ve got.”
“Harry has not played a lot of one-day cricket over the last few years,” Mott said. “He’s been exceptionally good in Test cricket and T20 cricket and in leagues around the world, but the guys that we did pick have done a great job for England over the last few years. It’s always harder to get into sides than it is to get out of them and we’ve played that card there.
“As I’ve said, it’s a provisional squad. Every team will be tinkering before that World Cup and everyone – whether they’re in that 15 or outside it – should be determined to try and put their best foot forward.”
