Former India opener Wasim Jaffer has revealed MS Dhoni’s goal in international cricket when he started playing for Team India. The former India skipper turned 42 on Friday (July 7).
After making his debut for India in 2004, Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2023 as one of the most decorated cricketers in the history of the game. He led Team India for almost a decade and managed to leave a huge mark in international cricket as a batsman, wicketkeeper and a captain. He is also widely regarded as the best finisher in the history of the game.

He bowed out of international cricket after representing India in 90 Tests, 350 ODIs and 98 T20Is. Dhoni scored 4,876 runs in Tests, 10,773 runs in ODIs, and 1,617 runs T20Is. The legendary wicketkeeper also has more than 800 dismissals as a wicketkeeper.
Dhoni’s record as a captain is equally impressive. In his very first stint as India captain, he led the team to a historic triumph in the 2007 T20 World Cup. Four years later, India won the ODI World Cup after a gap of 28 years before winning the Champions Trophy in 2013. Till date, Dhoni remains the only captain to hold all the three white-ball trophies.

While MS Dhoni retired from international cricket as a great, he did not really have high ambitions. According to Wasim Jaffer, the wicketkeeper-batsman only wanted to earn Rs 30 lakh so that he could live a peaceful life in his hometown Ranchi. Jaffer also revealed that Dhoni did not even want to leave Ranchi and was just focused on earning a good amount by playing cricket and returning to his hometown.
“In 2005, I had made my comeback and Dhoni had come into the Indian team towards the end of 2004. Me, my wife, Dinesh Karthik and his wife, Dhoni, we used to sit on the seats which were behind. Dhoni used to talk to my wife quite a lot.
“He used to say that his aim is to make Rs 30 lakh, so he could spend the rest of his life very peacefully in Ranchi. He didn’t want to leave Ranchi also – “kuch bhi jo jaaye, main Ranchi nahi chhodunga’, he used to say,” Jaffer told Sportskeeda.
“He was new to the team, so he felt that ₹30 lakh would be enough for him to live peacefully. I remember he said to my wife, ‘Bhabhi, mujhe 30 laakh rupay banane hai’ [I want to earn ₹30 lakh],”he added.
Well, Dhoni went on to become not only one of the most successful cricketers but one of the richest as well. According to reports, he is currently worth a staggering USD 127 million (INR 1040 crores).
