Arizona Senate candidate Kari Lake believes Donald Trump has been subject to an “eight-year character assassination”.

Speaking to Nigel Farage on GB News America, the former broadcaster claimed this has only served to make people “love him more”.

The former US President remains a controversial figure as he bids for a second term, with a litany of legal troubles facing him.

Trump faces a total of 91 felony counts in four criminal indictments, with prison sentences possible in each case.

But according to Lake, his legal troubles are a “witch-hunt”.

“This is election interference”, she claimed.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

“There’s no other way to put it. He’s in four different jurisdictions with political motivated prosecutors coming after him on bogus charges.

“It’s unfortunate that he has to go through this. This has been an eight-year witch hunt.

“Remember eight years ago when President Trump decided to step into politics?

“He was beloved by all Americans. The liberals to the conservatives, Republicans, Democrats.”

Lake, who has been put forward as an outside candidate for Trump’s running mate, said Trump has been “weaponised”, but American people “see right through it”.

“It only emboldens people to want to be more vocal and support him”, she said.

“If they want to bring this guy down so badly that they’ve been on an eight-year character assassination.

“It just makes people love him more that he stands up and fights.”

Despite Trump’s issues, the former president romped to victory in the Iowa caucus with more than half of the vote.

Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley remain in the running for the Republican nomination, but Trump is keen for them to step aside to give him a clear run to the election.

The 77-year-old is widely expected to face off against Joe Biden in what would be a rematch of the 2020 election.
