The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to conduct an auction for the five Women’s Indian Premier League (Women’s IPL) franchises and there will be no first right of refusal for the current Indian Premier League (IPL) team owners, according to a report in Cricbuzz.

At the 91st Annual General Meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which was held on October 18, 2022, in Mumbai, the general body approved to conduct of the long-awaited Women’s Indian Premier League (Women’s IPL).

“The General Body approved to conduct the Women’s Indian Premier League” – the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stated in a press release while sharing the key decisions made at the AGM.

If reports are to be believed, BCCI is planning a five-team Women’s IPL for March 2023, immediately after the conclusion of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, which is set to take place in South Africa.

As per Cricbuzz, very soon another general body meeting will be held after the acting CEO Hemang Amin prepares the Women’s IPL model.

Earlier, it was reported that the BCCI has planned to offer the current Indian Premier League owners the option of buying the women’s teams. However, reportedly the plans have now been changed as currently there are 10 franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and several franchises have shown interest in acquiring Women’s teams also there is a need for only 5 franchises in the Women’s IPL.

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has reportedly decided to conduct an auction for the five Women’s Indian Premier League franchises and an official has said that there will be no first right of refusal for the existing Indian Premier League (IPL) owners.

“The details are being worked out and we will soon finalise how to go about it,” Rajeev Shukla, the BCCI vice-president, said.

“You (reporters) seem to know more than the BCCI,” when asked about the first right of refusal to the IPL owners.
